How to Prepare for a Professional House Cleaning

People regularly tell me they "cleaned before the cleaner came" — and I understand the instinct, but most of that effort is wasted. Here is what actually helps me do a better job in your home, what to skip, and the small things that make a visit go smoothly.

Do: clear, don’t clean

The single most useful prep is decluttering surfaces. Every dish out of the sink, every pile of mail off the counter, and every toy off the floor converts directly into deeper cleaning time. I can either organize your things or clean your surfaces well — clearing lets me do the second, which is what you are paying for.

• Put away dishes, mail, chargers, and countertop clutter
• Pick up clothes and items from bedroom and bathroom floors
• Clear what you can from the shower ledge and vanity
• Decide what is off-limits (a desk mid-project, a collection) and just tell me

Skip: actual cleaning

Do not scrub the toilet, wipe counters, or vacuum before I arrive. Pre-cleaning does not lower your price and it does not change my checklist — every visit covers the same surfaces regardless. Save your Saturday.

Pets: tell me, don’t hide them

I like pets, and most pets decide they like me by the second visit. What helps: a heads-up about who I will meet, where they prefer to wait, and anything they are weird about (vacuums are the usual suspect). Anxious dogs generally do best in a bedroom that I clean first, so they get the rest of the house back quickly.

Access beats attendance

You do not need to be home — most of my regulars are not. A door code, lockbox, or garage keypad works perfectly, and you will get an email when everything is done. If it is your first clean and you want to walk through together, I am glad to; after that, most people happily hand over a code.
